Nourishing Your Skin: After Summer Skin Repair

In between summer and fall, the sun is still warm and inviting, but not the best for our skin. Avoiding excessive sunlight and kicking the nicotine habit are the more obvious ways to protect your skin, but what you eat can also make big a difference. Many dermatologists agree that eating foods high in antioxidants is a great way to keep you skin looking great. Here’s why…

Using food to improve your skin

Citrus fruit such as oranges, lemons and grapefruit contain Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is essential to building collagen, a vital component of younger-looking skin.

Sweet potatoes, cantaloupe and carrots are high in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that helps to balance your skins pH, combat dryness, and promote skin cells to turnover leaving smoother skin.

Tomatoes and watermelon are high in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant known to protect the body against certain cancers. Lycopene also works to shields the skin from sun damage, like sunscreen, but from the inside out.

Salmon is high in omega 3 fatty acids and an antioxidant called astaxanthin. These powerful nutrients help repair skin damage caused by aging.

Spinach, kale and other leafy green vegetables contain the antioxidant lutein. Lutein protects the skin from sun-induced inflammation and wrinkles.

So there you have it; healthy, younger- looking skin from eating foods rich in antioxidants.  Bon appetite!
